Graham Peter Barnett used his position as treasurer of Oswestry's Cae Glas Cricket Club to swindle £3,819 out of the club between 2005 and 2011.

Barnett, 66, of Hampton Fields, Oswestry, also stole £4,743.27 from F Smith and Son in the town where he worked as a delivery man between 2008 and 2011. Yesterday at Shrewsbury Crown Court Barnett, known as Peter, was sentenced to a total of 10 months in prison.

Barnett, who used to work for NatWest, admitted six counts of theft and three counts of false accounting at an earlier hearing. He has since repaid the money.

Mr Kevin Jones, prosecuting, said Barnett helped himself to cash from the cricket club's match fees, shirt sales and fundraisers and failed to bank thousands of pounds over a three-year period at F?Smith and Son.

Ms Samantha Crabb, defending, said Barnett was a "pillar of the community" and was at a "complete loss" to explain why he had committed the thefts.
