Newport Canals trust's anger as yobs target towpath
Vandals have repeatedly targeted signs, railings and benches along a canal towpath in Shropshire.
Canal enthusiasts have spoken of their frustration after the 'mindlesss' attacks by yobs in recent weeks.
Now Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust has decided it will not to replace a sign at Fishers Lock, in Newport, because it has been targeted so often.
The sign, which told the history of the canal, has been damaged by air rifles and also set on fire.
Trust chairman Bernie Jones said: "This is a progressive problem. We put up five of the information panels right along the length of the canal.
"First of all the one at Fishers Lock had pellets shot through the plastic cover and then they burned it.
"At that point of the canal there was also a seat chucked in the canal and a lot of young trees were snapped off.
"There are obviously some mindless kids going up there every night," Mr Jones added.
"All the daffodils were broken too.
"It's absolutely unacceptable and very silly.
"We have taken the decision that there is no point in replacing the sign if it's just going to be vandalised over and over again.
"We'll just wait until they either grow up or move away.
"It's a shame because there are hundreds of people who enjoy the towpath."
Police have been informed about the latest vandalism.
