The pioneering Japanese giant moved to Telford nearly 25 years ago, paving the way for an influx of foreign companies, which transformed the economy of the new town.
The firm says its factory at Apley, near Wellington, will remain open to house its moulding division. The company, which originally made video and audio tapes, has adapted to changing markets over the years to retain its position in Telford.
A company statement blamed the move on "very competitive" trading conditions with "lower volumes and severe price decreases which have eroded profit margins".
It said it was "considering a proposal to reorganise the manufacturing operation with the closure of the Maxell packaging division."
The company's proposal is to close the packaging division at the end of March.
