Telecoms giant BT is creating more than 130 jobs across the Shropshire and Midlands region in a bid to boost its service to broadband customers.

And the company revealed today it was particularly keen to add more women to its network of "field technicians".

BT's Openreach division said extra staff were needed because of the growth in demand for broadband services, and to provide greater capacity in the local communications network.

Paul Hendron, Openreach's regional director for the Midlands, said: "We are in the process of recruiting just over 130 new technicians.

"We are doing a lot of work with organisations such as Fair Cities and Job Centre Plus, but we have been very disappointed at the number of women coming forward to take up the jobs.

"The main locations where we still have vacancies are Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Hereford, Shrewsbury, and in the core West Midlands, where successful recruits will develop the skills to enable them to install broadband, work in telephone exchanges and on overhead lines."
