Among the events was a flypast at RAF Cosford featuring a Hurricane jet on Saturday.

There was also a service of remembrance at Wem War Memorial near the parish church, led by the town's mayor Councillor Rosemary Dodd.

In Market Drayton there were several events on Saturday, including a parade to celebrate the town's close links with Clive Barracks at Tern Hill.

The armed forces flag has been raised outside the town hall in honour of serving troops and their families.

Telford parkrun attracted military staff who wore uniforms and supporters donned red, white and blue costumes. They cheered as a squirrel helicopter from the Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury flew past in salute of their efforts.

The amazing sight and sound of a Hurricane in the sky over Shropshire brought the memories flooding back for friends Jim Backhouse and Leslie Stocking.

The two war veterans – now 91 and 90 respectively – were in high spirits as they celebrated the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Hurricane flypast at the Royal Air Force Museum in Cosford.

Both Mr Backhouse and Mr Stocking have been awarded the prestigious Legion d'Honnuer by the French government to D-Day veterans from different countries to honour those who fought and risked their lives to secure France's liberation during the Second World War.

They both fought at Normandy and were at the memorial event held to help celebrate the contribution of the UK and commonwealth military.

The display on Saturday also featured a concert by an orchestra. Mr Stocking said: "It was a very nice day and we were well looked after by everyone.

"We actually met in the 1950s after the war and we've been friends ever since."

RAF Shawbury personnel and their families were among 540 runners and 20 volunteers taking part in the Telford parkrun also on Saturday.

The Hawker Hurricane became renowned during the Battle of Britain between July and October 1940, accounting for 60 per cent of the RAF's air victories in the battle.

David Cameron attended a national event in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, alongside the Duke of Kent to see displays by the Red Arrows, the RAF Falcons parachute team and the Royal Marines, who performed a beach landing.

The outgoing Prime Minister said: "It made me incredibly proud to be in Cleethorpes today to see so many people showing their support for our armed forces. As Prime Minister I have seen first hand the amazing job that the men and women of all three services do.

"Whether taking the fight to Daesh in Syria and Iraq or helping to deal with emergencies in the UK - their sacrifice keeps us safe.

"It is right that we show our support, both by holding events such as this and ensuring that that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly.

"That is why we are helping thousands of forces families to buy a home and supporting their children with additional educational funding."
