Woman, 83, killed in five-car crash

An 83-year-old woman has died in a five-vehicle crash.

It happened at about 2.50pm yesterday on the A483. just north of the A458 in Welshpool, a stretch of road commonly known as Moors Length.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said: "An 83-year-old female was injured in the collision and despite the best efforts of those present she sadly died at the scene.

"Next of kin have been informed and a specialist officer is providing family support."

One other casualty was taken from scene by ambulance and remains in hospital. Their condition is not believed to be serious.

The road remained closed for a number of hours while a detailed investigation was undertaken.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or person with information that may assist the investigation to contact Dyfed Powys Police Roads Policing Unit at Newtown Police Station.

Emergency services in Powys were stretched by a spate of crashes on the busy roads as people headed for their Easter break.
