Petition after Telford road is 'left in mess by HGVs'

A petition has been launched over the state of the roads in a part of Telford, with residents raising concerns about lorries using a local recycling centre.

Paul Nichols, of Newdale, set up the petition on website Go Petition, claiming that Rock Road and Waterloo Road in Ketley were being left in a shabby condition.

He also said he was concerned at the number of HGVs travelling to the Greenway Waste Recycling site. So far 50 people have signed the petition.

Mr Nichols said: "The drastic increase in large lorries parking on the road and the only public footpath is a particular area for concern and is a danger to pedestrians and motorists.

"Another concern is the pest issue and vast amount of rubbish and dirt strewn across the hedgerows, road, grass verges, the local play area and people's property.

"The general appearance of the site is appalling making it an unpleasant place to pass and live by.

"Due to the volume of large lorries using the road its condition has deteriorated and become unsafe and poses a risk to pedestrians who have to cross the road to pass the parked vehicles.

"The petition is, at the moment, in its infancy and I shortly will be actively promoting residents around the area to sign. Initial findings are that this will be very well supported as it directly affects many people."

Telford & Wrekin Council says steps are already in place to resolve the issue around Rock Road and Waterloo Road.

Russell Griffin, a spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "We are planning to paint double yellow lines on The Rock in Ketley this month once the road has been swept to address some of the traffic issues.

"We are looking into the other issues raised by the petition and determining how they are best addressed. Our planning department has an ongoing dialogue with the company to try and help them address the issues raised."

Greenway took over the recycling centre in 2014 after Pink Skips left the site.

Waste is stored at Telford by the company until being moved to a waste processing plant in Amsterdam.

It is not the first time there have been issues at the site. In February last year, residents complained after lorries delivering to Greenway blocked the road to other users while waiting to enter the site.

The company apologised for the problem and said it would take steps to stop it from happening again.

Greenway was unavailable for comment at the time of going to print.
