West Mercia Police said there were no major incidents of disorder and that officers and stewards dealt swiftly with any minor incidents that occurred and there were no arrests made during the game which United went on to win 3-0.

There was a significant police presence inside the ground as officers ensured supporters of both sides were able to enjoy the match, and members of the public were able to go about their business without disturbance.

This was the fist time mounted officers had been used in the policing of a Shrewsbury Town match and added to the success of the policing operation. Mounted officers, from Thames Valley Police, were able to survey the crowd from an elevated level and ensure that control measures could be implemented in a timely manner.

Chief Inspector James Baker said :"This game was a hugely significant fixture for Shrewsbury Town and we had an appropriate policing operation in place in respect of this match. We were able to ensure supporters from both sides were able to watch the game safely without serious incident.

"We would like to thank both Shrewsbury Town and Manchester United for their support before, during and after the game.

"The fans themselves were extremely sensible and were a credit to their respective clubs."

Inspector Edward Hancox said: "I would like to thank all of the fans who attended last nights game for their co-operation. I would also like to like to take the opportunity to congratulate the winners Manchester United, good luck for the sixth round!

"The night was also successful in policing terms, as expected the majority of fans came to support their teams and enjoy a competitive match. There were a number of minor offences which were dealt with swiftly by officers and stewards at the stadium. No arrests were made.

"It was also great to see the support for the Mounted Branch from Thames Valley Police. The horses were the real stars of the night and posed for many 'selfies'. We will continue to assess their use for policing football matches in Shrewsbury, but certainly hope to see them back soon.

"Greenhous Meadow was filled to capacity and we are pleased to say that thanks to working with our partners from Greater Manchester Police, British Transport Police and representatives from the respective football clubs we were able to meet the challenges of such an event appropriately."
