A food fan from Shropshire sparked controversy on a BBC cooking show when he suggested pop star Will Young eat a piece of liver.

The caller, named only as John from Shrewsbury, phoned in to the Saturday Kitchen show, broadcast live on Saturday morning on BBC1, to ask chefs James Martin, Kuba Winkowski and Theo Randall for advice on cooking venison for Christmas.

After having his question answered, James asked if John would like to see the chefs cook a meal of 'food heaven' or 'food hell' for the singer.

The food heaven or food hell segment always comes at the end of the show and sees viewers and the guest chefs choosing whether the week's visiting celebrity should taste a dish containing their favourite ingredients or food they dislike.

Former Pop Idol winner Will had earlier in the show told viewers that he was a big fan of Italian food but couldn't bear liver or capers.

And John clearly favoured the option of liver and beer battered onion rings as he replied: "Sorry Will, it's got to be hell."

But the singer, 36, appeared less than impressed with the thought of eating offal and made a rude gesture before the camera flashed away.

The gesture, which was aired live at about 11am, sparked outrage among viewers, with many taking to Twitter to complain.

Twitter user @her_76, said: "Will Young, showing two fingers to a caller is not a great example for all the kids watching #saturdaykitchen #jamesmartin on BBC1."

Tony Woodrow @ToneWoodrow said: "disgraceful Will Young sticking up two fingers to a phone in caller.. so much for setting an example on a family show @fail"

And Dave Roberts @subaruguy2011 said: "@SaturdayKitchen Disgusted at Will Young 2 finger gesture at a viewer who phoned in the show and gave him the food hell choice."

The Leave Right Now singer shot to fame after winning the inaugural series of Pop Idol in 2002 and has since released six studio albums.
