Mother, 29, broke glass and attacked women at Ludlow house

A mother hurled concrete slabs at a house in Ludlow, smashing four double-glazed windows and showering glass over a sofa where a child had been sitting moments earlier, a court was told.

Charlotte Cowley also attacked three women, grabbing the throat of one and biting another, in a rage brought on by a mixture of alcohol and medication, magistrates at Telford heard.

Mr Adam Warner, prosecuting, said the first victim had been sitting at home with her mother, aunt and her 21-month-old daughter on the afternoon of March 27, when they were startled by a loud banging at their home in Houseman Crescent, Ludlow.

As the door was opened Cowley lunged at the woman, shouting about a man she wished to speak to and grabbed her throat.

As her mother and aunt came to help, they too were attacked, said Mr Warner. Cowley grabbed the first victim's mother by her collar and then bit her on the side of the head and started punching her.

The defendant then kicked the aunt in the rib cage before the women got her out of the front door.

Cowley then began throwing concrete paving at the side windows before going round to the back garden and hurling a belt sander through the kitchen window.

She then turned to throwing paving, breaking the side windows before coming to the front garden and throwing concrete through the front window. Mr Warner said glass showered all over a sofa where moments earlier the victim's 21-month-old daughter had been sitting.

When police arrived, Cowley told them she "had put a brick through the window" but would not say anything because she was drunk.

Cowley, of High Street, Pershore, Worcestershire, initially denied three charges of assault by beating but pleaded guilty to them on August 3. She had earlier admitted a single charge of criminal damage.

Mr Warner said Cowley, a 29-year-old mother of two, had drunk a bottle of vodka which had reacted with her medication.

Magistrates gave her a 12-month community order with 12 months supervision and 30 days of rehabilitation activities. She was fined £50 and told to pay £100 to each of the victims for the assault and £500 to the housing association for the smashed windows. She was also ordered to pay £250 of prosecution costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Mr Mark Lister, for Cowley, said she was of good character with no previous convictions.

"The incident occurred as a result of her mixing alcohol with her medication," he said.

Cowley had only been living in the area for a short period of time but had since moved to her new address in Pershore, he added.
