Father-of-two Colin Reynolds, 31, from St Georges, who was stationed in Inverness, Scotland, with the Royal Marines, was out in the city on November 23 last year.

Fiscal depute Michelle Molley told Inverness Sheriff Court that at around 3.10am Reynolds and Mark Ross were waiting in the queue at the Castle Wynd area of the city when an argument ensued.

Reynolds was under the impression that Mr Ross had tried to jump in front of him, and after heated words were exchanged, punched Mr Ross in the face, which resulted in him sustaining a broken nose.

Police were called and Reynolds was arrested and taken to a police station, while Mr Ross was taken to hospital. He required treatment and was signed off work for two weeks.

Reynolds admitted assaulting Mark Ross on November 23, 2014 at Castle Wynd, Inverness, by punching him on the face to his injury.

Defence solicitor William Young told sheriff Margaret Neilson that Reynolds was stationed at Cameron Barracks, Inverness, to undergo training.

He said that Reynolds had consumed alcohol but Mr Ross was also heavily under the influence.

He added: "Mr Ross had takeaway food in his hands and threatened to stab Colin Reynolds with the plastic fork."

Solicitor Young also said that Reynolds did remain at the scene and wait for police to come and arrest him.

Sheriff Neilson fined him £600.
