Mrs Franklin, who was mother to floral designer Howard Franklin, was a descendant of King Nicholas I of Montenegro, of the Petrovic-Njegos line and was educated at Rathbone Girl's School where she was head girl before qualifying as a private secretary. During World War Two Mrs Franklin, who was known as Vicki, met her future husband Harry Leslie Franklin who was an Army officer.

Howard Franklin said: "My mother did essential war work and was one of only a handful of women to serve in the Home Guard during the war and was later commended by King George VI for her service."

Mr and Mrs Franklin moved to Church Stretton in 1949 where they lived until moving to Dorrington in 1972.

Howard Franklin added: "She was a great hostess and loved entertaining and many friends remember the hospitality of the Franklins over a great number of years and the spectacular parties she loved giving."

The funeral was attended by hundreds of people. The house of Montenegro was represented and a handwritten message was received from The Duchess of Cornwall who was a close friend.

The Vice Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire read the first lesson and in attendance were several past High Sheriffs. Shrewsbury & Atcham MP Daniel Kawczynski also attended.

The service was conducted by Leigh Northcott-Hammond from the Church in Wales and Rev Michael Gillons, a family friend. Music was provided by St Mary's Singers and an aria was sung by Abby Hadfield, a retired mezzo soprano from the D'oyly Carte Opera Company.

The address was given by Mrs Franklin's son who spoke of her family heritage and unshakeable Christian faith. A private committal took place at sunset at Dorrington Burial Ground.
