Three sides of Telford Town Centre's box road were today open to two-way traffic for the first time following 18 months of major multi-million pound roadworks.

Virtually all of the cones were removed from Woodhouse Central, Lawn Central and Grange Central in time for the morning rush hour.

Minor finishing works – including final landscaping, traffic signs and completion of the street lighting – will be completed over the next month. The final side – Coach Central – is set to reopen fully in about a month, completing the £11 million project.

Dave Hanley, from Telford & Wrekin Council's highways department, said: "We appreciate there has been a few delays in decisions and we apologise.

"There have been occasions where we have caused disruption and we apologise for that but if we can recognise it as short term pain long term gain I think people who live and work here will see real benefits from the new system."

"It has come in on budget and actually we are confident it will come in under budget."

Telford & Wrekin Council began works to turn the box road two-way a year and a half ago.

The authority hopes it will make the town centre a safer place for pedestrians and cyclists, improve traffic flows and improve access to the new Southwater complex.
