The Lord Hill column has been boxed in by scaffolding for several months, and work is already behind schedule for its removal.

Friends of the Lord Hill expected the month-long process to begin yesterday but Jarvis Scaffolding has yet to arrive to start work.

Reverend Richard Hayes, who is chairman of the campaign group, believes the Shrewsbury-based company has a backlog of work.

Work to take the scaffolding down had been due to start this month, but was put back. It was today unclear as to when work will actually start.

The scaffolding was initially erected following health and safety fears for the crumbling land mark, and tours are meant to be taking place for the column in September.

The Friends of the Lord Hill will be updated on the issue at a meeting tonight.
