A specialist underwater search team recovered the body at the site off Lordsley Lane in Ashley, near Market Drayton, this morning.

A police search was carried out after the man, who not yet been formally identified, is believed to have entered a lake on the site.

Emergency crews were called to the site just after 6.30pm yesterday, but initial searches found nothing.

Police returned to the site this morning with specialist search teams to continue the search.

Faye Casey, spokeswoman for Staffordshire Police, said: "The body of a local man has now been recovered from the water at the former quarry site in Ashley.

"The specialist underwater search team from Nottinghamshire Police recovered the body when searching re-commenced earlier today.

"We are now in the process of informing the man's family and friends.

"He has yet to be formally identified and this is unlikely to take place today."

"Our thoughts are with the man's family at this very difficult time and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

"The man's death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for HM Coroner."
