The Battlefield area in the north of the town was the worst hit, with traffic backed up all the way to the town centre yesterday afternoon.
Shoppers stocking up at the supermarkets for the holiday added to the chaos.
Problems began at lunchtime as many people left work early to avoid the traditional Easter Friday traffic jams and rush for the coast.
Roadworks on the Sundorne Road led to long queues and many motorists decided to take an alternative route through Battlefield. However, by 5pm, traffic flow had eased considerably.
Emergency services said there had been no road accidents that would have led to the traffic problems.
