Gang attacks Shrewsbury driver and escapes in his car
A gang launched a violent attack on a motorist in Shrewsbury before stealing his keys and driving off in his car.
Today police appealed for information about the attackers because of fears they could strike in the region again.
The 33-year-old victim was tripped, kicked and stamped on by the gang, detectives say.
It is believed to have been an unprovoked assault, in which the gang saw an opportunity to steal the car.
The attack happened after several men pulled up in a car and chased the man before tripping him up near the Ditherington Community Centre on Long Row.
They then assaulted him as he lay on the ground.
The men went through his trouser pockets, stealing keys, a mobile phone and a small amount of cash.
Detectives say they then drive off in his blue Renault Clio.
The attack happened between 10.30pm and 10.45pm on Wednesday night and police today appealed for any witnesses who for anyone who suspects they know anyone involved in the gang.
Detective Constable Nick Williams said the victim was removing items from his car boot outside Ditherington Community Centre when the attack happened.
A dark coloured car, possibly a Ford Mondeo, pulled up alongside the victim and several men got out of the vehicle.
"They chased him a short distance and while he was on the ground, they punched, kicked and stamped on him before making off in his Renault Clio," he said.
"I am appealing for witnesses – anyone who saw any part of this incident is asked to contact Shrewsbury CID.
"We are also appealing for assistance in establishing the current whereabouts of the Renault and also the identities of the offenders."
The registration number of the stolen car is DY52 XRC.
The victim was not seriously injured but was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where he was treated for multiple cuts and bruises.
