Church Stretton pair making their diamond day

They've been married for almost 60 years and say the secret to their longevity is getting on so well – but when George and Doris Hauff first met it was quite a different story.

Mrs Hauff was a nurse at a hospital in north London when she treated her future husband following an operation – and she said he was "a bit of a pain".

But despite their inauspicious start the pair were soon dating – and within a year they were wed.

They will reach the diamond wedding anniversary on March 6, and have said they can't believe how fast the time has passed. The couple will be having a celebratory dinner with family and friends at the Longmynd Hotel in Church Stretton on March 8.

Mrs Hauff, 85, said: "I was nursing him at Willesden General Hospital. George came in as a patient and he was a bit of a pain, to be honest, as he was the noisy type – he always has been."

The couple married at Willesden Methodist Church and lived in in West London. Mrs Hauff worked as a district nurse and Mr Hauff as a tool maker, and they had a daughter and a son, who have since given them two grandchildren.

They retired to Church Stretton 25 years ago and still live there today.

Mrs Hauff said: "We came because we liked the hills. Of course we look at them now and think we can't really walk up them – but we have done it."

Asked for the secret of their success Mrs Hauff said: "We just get on well and don't argue – we're both quite easy going."
