Shropshire war heroes' details sought

A new memorial is to be created to commemorate the men of a Shropshire parish who fought in the Great War in this centenary year of the outbreak of the conflict.

And now an appeal has been made in an effort to uncover as much information as possible about those local heroes of 100 years ago – and ensure none are missed.

The memorial is to be created at Ludford Park Meadow of Remembrance at Ludford, near Ludlow. An area is being cleared and will be sown with wild flowers – largely poppies – to create a small wild flower area of remembrance. And a plaque containing the names of 66 men from the parish known to have served will be mounted on a plinth in August. "We want to see if there are any descendants left, and find out if they have photographs and stories about them," said Mrs Lin Dalton, who owns the park with her husband.

"For example, we have found out that the men who came back were given a celebration meal at the Charlton Arms and presented with a small pipe. We are wondering if anybody still has one of those, or remembers it.

"We are also particularly interested in hearing from the family of Henry and Alfred Saunders, who were the first two to have been killed in action from Ludford."
