They used an aerial ladder to put out the fire at a house in Hamlet Road.

Flames had spread to the floor and skirting board in a bedroom at about 1.10pm yesterday. But residents escaped unharmed, and crews had left the scene just after 4pm.

Speaking at the scene, Ludlow crew manager Steve Perks said: "We've had to use an aerial ladder platform from Telford to get access to the top. We couldn't get rods up the chimney from below because of a build up of soot and clinker.

"The main safety message would be to make sure your chimneys are swept – it's getting to the end of the winter season and there might be build-up in the chimney."
