Workmen refitting the former Pippins fruit shop on Sandford Avenue, Church Stretton, ran from the building at about 1.40pm yesterday.
Fire crews closed the street, fearing the two Calor gas cylinders in the ground floor showroom may explode.
Owner Wendy Farlow said: "There was a gas fire with a gas bottle and it leaked. There were three workmen there but they were unhurt."
She said the shop is undergoing a refit as her business next door is expanding into it.
"The fire crews were really worried. We were very, very lucky nobody was hurt," she added.
The fire was extinguished by 2pm and the road reopened.
