Shrewsbury is in the running for Britain in Bloom's Champion of Champions accolade – the ultimate award in community gardening.

Shrewsbury, which won the best small city award at last year's finals, is up against Ahoghill from Ulster, the City of London, Glenrothes in Scotland and Woolton in Liverpool.

Shrewsbury Flower Show chairman of marketing Nigel Pearson said: "We are delighted and excited that the town has been able to get this far in such a prestigious competition.

"It shows the hard work and dedication that went in to preparing the town for the judge's visit from town residents and the town's hierarchy. I am really pleased and delighted that this has been recognised."

Helen Ball, Shrewsbury Town Council clerk, added: "We are delighted that we warranted being in the Champion of Champions category."

Two other Shropshire sitess are also in the running for awards – Bridgnorth and Norton in Hales, near Market Drayton.
