'The world's greatest cream tea' . . . in Shropshire

Cream teas served at a closure-threatened Shropshire tearoom are "the world's greatest" – according to TV presenter and historian Dan Snow.

The 35-year-old caused a stir when he turned up with a film crew for a hush-hush new project at De Grey's in Ludlow yesterday afternoon.

Shortly after, he took to Twitter to tell his 64,000 followers: "I have just eaten the world's greatest cream tea. In @degreysludlow. The things I do to bring you great history progs! It was a trial."

De Grey's manager Robbie Underhill said: "It was fantastic of him to say that.

"He was here from about 3pm and people recognised him straight away.

"He was doing some filming in De Grey's, though I have no idea what programme it is for, I'm afraid."

Managers at the tearoom are currently consulting with more than 40 members of staff about the possibility of redundancies, with a cut-off date of January 18 set for a final decision.

De Grey's, housed in a black and white oak framed Elizabethan property built in the 14th century, has been in operation for more than 100 years.
