Fire crews from Shrewsbury were called to Wyle Cop in the town just after midnight to reports that a section of the pavement had collapsed.

No members of the public were on the section of path at the time.

The fire service helped to make the area safe and waited for the gas board and structural engineers to arrive and assess the scene.

The problem is now being looked into by emergency planning officers from Shropshire Council.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was not clear at this time what had caused the pavement to collapse.
