Runners and walkers of all ages turned out in their droves for the 34th Christmas Eve Escapade in Moreton, near Newport.

Competitors were given maps and challenged to complete the 3km, 7km and 11km courses in the fastest time.

The energy-sapping course took runners over cattle grids, fences and ploughed fields.

This year torrential rain and high winds before the race made conditions even more difficult than usual – but did not dampen the spirits of those involved.

There was plenty of festive cheer with many competitors donning Christmas hats and tinsel for the occasion.

The race is organised by Newport & District Running Club and the course is drawn up by former Great Britain orienteering ace Dave Gittus, who has helped organise the event for 34 years.

Mr Gittus, of Wellington Road, Newport, said: "The day before it was so wet and windy, it was unbelievable. We were lucky that things had calmed down by Christmas Eve. There are no prizes but people really enjoy getting out and getting dirty on Christmas Eve."

Money raised from the entry fee, probably about £300, will go to Severn Hospice.
