Iconic locomotive steams in to Shropshire
Dozens of train enthusiasts from across Shropshire steamed into Shrewsbury railway station to catch a glimpse of a historic locomotive.
The Britannia locomotive pulled into the station more than 60 years after it was first in operation.
It was due to arrive in the station at 2.30pm on Saturday, but was delayed for about an hour by a broken down freight train.
The engine came to Shrewsbury from London Waterloo in a journey which offered a once-in-a-lifetime trip for steam fans who were able to ride the engine cross-country from the capital.
Though the train finished its travels in Shrewsbury, it did make several stops, including some in Herefordshire and at Ludlow railway station.
Richard Corser, general manager of the locomotive, said that although the train makes regular short trips around London, and has done longer journeys, its visit to Shrewsbury was a special one.
He said: "Shrewsbury is a wonderful destination," he said. "It is a very historic town with a great railway history."
To mark the train's visit to the town, the historic Abbey Station in Abbey Foregate, which has recently undergone a £75,000 renovation project, was opened to the public.
