The houses will go up on land partially designated for employment off Hadley Park West in Hadley now Telford & Wrekin Council planners approved the proposal.

Car parking, garages, amenity space and landscaping is also proposed for the 7.8 acre spot formerly agricultural land. The development has netted £100,000 towards the rejuvenation of the disused Trench Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal.

The stretch of canal to the west of the site includes Grade II listed lock structures which date back to the late 18th century.

Other conditions of the permission include 15 per cent of the build comprising affordable housing and contributions of £16,100 towards highway improvements.

Another £134,378 must be contributed towards primary education and £50,000 towards open spaces. At last night's meeting of Telford & Wrekin Council's planning committee, councillor Shirley Reynolds said: "We are very lucky to have enough employment land in this area and the quality of the green network will be enhanced by this plan."

She added: "I am delighted that this proposal will regenerate the lock structures."

The committee resolved to delegate authority to the development manager to approve subject to conditions. The application site is currently designated as green network to the north, west and southern parts of the site, and the central part of the site is allocated for employment.

In a report to members, Anna Adams, planning officer for Telford & Wrekin Council wrote: "The site is located in the built-up area of Telford and whilst part of the site is currently committed for employment land and the rest is designated Green Network."
