Councillors voted through plans for 291 homes in Sutton Grange, off Oteley Road, which have been submitted by developers Taylor Wimpey, at a meeting in Shirehall yesterday.

A report to councillors on the central planning committee said the construction process could create up to 1,300 jobs, while also providing a £2.3 million windfall to Shropshire Council.

It said: "A proposal for 291 homes has the potential to support 1,300 jobs over the construction period in terms of direct jobs and those in the supply chain.

"The Sutton Grange proposals would also contribute around £2,342,000 in a new homes bonus over six years, which is a payment designed to ensure that the economic benefits of housing growth are returned to the councils and communities."

The scheme represents the first part of the Shrewsbury South Sustainable Urban Extension blueprint drawn up by Shropshire Council, which will lead to the creation of 900 homes and 22 hectares of employment land. The development had been revised from original plans, with one property removed after concerns were raised by English Heritage about how it would impact on the nearby Orthodox Church.

A separate application for 42 properties in Woodcote Way was also given the go-ahead at the same meeting.
