Joan Hough, of Hough and Sons Butchers on Beaumont Road, said the taps ran dry at about 1pm yesterday but came back shortly before 3pm.

Next door, Mikala Okur, manager of Cafe Flamingoes, said: "I nearly had to shut up shop because I couldn't wash up and needed water for the coffee machine."

Sarah McArthur, spokeswoman for Severn Trent Water said: "We'd like to apologise to customers in Church Stretton who may have been affected by a problem with a water valve today.

"We've been able to re-route water supplies and carry out a temporary repair so our customers aren't affected."
