David Briscoe, of Grinshill Drive, Shrewsbury, was banned from driving for 36 months and given a 12-month community order after admitting driving his Ford Focus car while intoxicated on July 6.

Police pulled him over on Grinshill Drive and he provided two breath tests, Shrewsbury Magistrates Court was told yesterday.

Both readings confirmed that the defendant had 142 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 mililitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

The court was told that Briscoe was a first time offender who had recently been made redundant after working for all of his adult life.

Magistrate Charles Nunnerley said: "With such a high reading we did have to consider a custodial sentence but we have taken into account your early guilty plea."
