But Neil Yates, 41, of Sandringham Road, Wombourne, had his sentence cut by two weeks as credit for a guilty plea, which he entered yesterday when he was due to stand trial at Telford Magistrates Court.

He admitted assault and was sentenced to serve 22 weeks in prison.

Mr Andrew Burke, prosecuting, said Yates's 69-year-old mother had returned to her home near Bridgnorth on December 20 to find her son had been drinking heavily.

She told him to "slow down" his drinking then sat down to watch television. He approached her and swore at her, before grabbing her by the throat and throwing her to the floor.

Mr Burke said she was thrown to the floor again and hit her head on a piece of furniture. She managed to get out of the house and drove to Bridgnorth police station, where she was found to have severe bruising and a swollen eye. Officers went to the house and Yates was arrested. He denied assault, and said his mother had fallen.

When interviewed, his mother said she had gone to the police because she wanted her son to get professional help for his drinking and anger issues.

Mr Chris Grainger, defending, said Yates had changed his plea because he did not want to put his mother through the trauma of giving evidence.
