The annual event was held at Shrewsbury Golf Day last month to raise funds for Severndale Specialist School and attracted a record 48 teams.

The teams were joined by special guest Larry Lloyd, former Nottingham Forest and England footballer and uncle to one of the school's pupils.

A grand total of about £9,500 was raised from the day, with the money due to go towards funding after-school activities for students.

Maria Whittaker, administration assistant at the school, said: "This enables our students to continue enjoying after school club activities, including a golf club on a Tuesday night at the Welsh Border Golf Club, rebound, film club, pamper club and many more.

"Our families value this additional support and, as a school, we have made a commitment to continue to support such activities despite the government removing the funding.

"As normal we had amazing prizes donated, from iPods to days at the races and a signed shirt from England and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, which we also auctioned.

"This year the charity golf day was at the beautiful Shrewsbury Golf Club and we were delighted with the day and the response as we had the more players than ever before, with 48 teams playing.

"We are exceptionally grateful to our main sponsors RMW and PWD for their support and everyone concerned with the day. We would also like to thank all the people who donated prizes and sponsored the day."

Plans are already being laid for the school's next golf day on June 13 next year.
