Shropshire doctor suspended in hospital probe
A senior doctor at Shropshire's two main hospitals has been suspended and is being investigated, it emerged today.
Dr Adam Farmer has been 'excluded' from the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust pending the results of the investigation by health bosses.
He could still operate under private practice but his registration as a doctor is subject to a series of strict conditions while inquiries continue.
Dr Farmer works as a consultant physician and gastroenterologist – a specialist in medicine focused on the digestive system – and is based at the Princess Royal Hospital.
The nature of the allegations against him has not been made public.
Dr Edwin Borman, the Trust's medical?director, said: "We are aware of an allegation against Dr Adam Farmer, a consultant at the Trust, and are investigating this."
Following a meeting of a GMC 'interim orders panel', Dr Farmer is subject to 11 separate conditions over his registration.
All of his day-to-day work must be supervised by a fellow consultant or a doctor of equivalent seniority.
He can only prescribe drugs under arrangements which have been agreed between the GMC and his supervising doctor and cannot prescribe any drugs for himself or family.
Dr Farmer must also cease work immediately if the person advising the GMC in relation to his fitness to practise recommends that he do so.
Dr Farmer held a practice with the private Nuffield Hospital in Shrewsbury for a few months until early December 2012 but has not practised at the hospital since, although he still appears on the company's website.
