Shrewsbury bar's go-ahead to keep outdoor area

A Shrewsbury town centre bar can keep its outdoor seating area for good, councillors have decided.

The Montgomery's Tower bar and restaurant, in Lower Claremont Bank, Shrewsbury, was given permission in 2011 to test the outdoor seating for six months, despite objections from Shrewsbury Town Council, local councillors and residents.

They claimed it would lead to a rise in anti-social behaviour and questioned why it was needed, given that the rear of the bar already had a outdoor terrace.

The permit was later extended for another 12 months, but that was due to end on May 14, and J D Wetherspoon, which runs Montgomery's Tower, then applied for a permanent extension.

This was unanimously approved at yesterday's Central Planning Committee meeting.

Councillor Andrew Bannerman, for Quarry and Coton Hill, said he was not in favour of the plans but admitted he had received no further letters of objection.
