Ecstatic Robin and Christine Kiddie, from Ludlow, were the sole winners of the top prize when their numbers – 2, 16, 25, 30, 31 and 32 – all came out in Saturday's draw.

Sales manager Robin, 60, did not realise he had won until he checked his numbers online at work on Monday morning.

He said he tried to phone Christine, also 60, a bank nurse at Ludlow Hospital, to tell her the good news but she was upstairs and could not hear it ringing.

The father-of-four then texted his three daughters and only son with the simple message: 'I've got some good news, we've won £6.2 million on the lottery'.

He said at a press conference at the Fishmore Hall Hotel, near Ludlow, today, he glanced at the winning lottery numbers on the television on Sunday night and thought some may have been the same as his own.

Mr Kiddie, who works at a manufacturing firm in Cradley Heath, said: "I thought I may have up to four numbers on one line, but as it was late, I went to bed and decided to check in the morning.

"I arrived at work after 8 and decided to go online and check the lottery numbers to see whether we had won and how much it might be. As soon as the numbers came up on screen, I realised we had all six on one line. I couldn't believe it and thought it was a mistake," he added.

"I tried to call Christine but as we have no phone upstairs, she didn't hear it."

The couple, who are due to celebrate their ruby wedding anniversary in April, also have five grandchildren and intend to share the cash with their daughters, aged 39, 37 and 36, and their 32-year-old son.

The winning ticket was bought at Tesco in Kidderminster.

The biggest ever county winners were Keith and Louise Gough, from Bridgnorth, who won more than £9 million in 2005. But Mr Gough was allegedly penniless when he died in 2010 at 58 after heart attack.
