Plans for up to 185 homes on Telford quarry site
A community of more than 180 homes around a central village green could be built on a disused quarry in Telford.
Plans which could see 185 homes built in Hadley over the next eight years are being recommended for approval when they go before councillors next week.
Telford & Wrekin Council will meet on Wednesday to discuss Michelmersh Brick Holdings' plans for land next to the Blockleys brick factory, off Sommerfeld Road and Marlborough Road.
Plans for the 80-acre site include a village green at the centre of the estate and a park area, which could provide allotments and recreational space.
The scheme also includes a new access road off Sommerfeld Road.
No objections have been raised by Hadley and Leegomery Parish Council for the proposed development, which would create nine one and two-bedroom apartments and 176 two to five-bedroom houses.
The development, which would be near bus routes and shops, makes no provision for affordable housing.
An area of parkland between the site and the brick factory would be retained to provide a noise buffer and visual screen.
If planning permission is granted, the council is expected to ask developers to contribute £500,000 towards local primary school education, a toucan crossing in Sommerfeld Road and an off-site play area.
Developers say the disused factory area is excellent for regeneration and they believe their plans would help to create a new community for the area.
They have put forward an outline planning application for the area and if the scheme is approved, meetings to discuss the layout, scale and landscaping of the new development will be set up.
More detailed plans for the housing would then be submitted at a later date.
A report to councillors said that the site had previously been part of the Blockleys brick works but now, after the demand for bricks had nearly halved since 2005, it was no longer needed.
