Rotary Club stalwart and fundraiser Harry Peachey dies
An 'extraordinary' man from Shropshire who was presented with one of the Rotary movement's most prestigious honours for his community work and charity fundraising efforts has died at the age of 91.
Henry Peachey, who was known as Harry, of Ludlow, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday. Mr Peachey, a father of two and grandfather of four, was a well-known face around Ludlow.
He was heavily involved with major events and groups in the town.
He was a member of the Rotary Club of Ludlow for 32 years and was its president in 1990/1. He was named as a Paul Harris Fellow in 1994 for his contribution to community life, as was his wife Jean.
He ran a fruit and vegetable shop for many years and was a member of the Festive Ludlow committee and a steward at Ludlow Festival. He was a long-term fundraiser for a number of good causes including Mac-millan Nurses and Hope House Children's Hospice, and was a keen follower of horse racing.
Tributes have today been paid to Mr Peachey.
Sue Fleetwood, a former president of the Rotary Club of Ludlow, said: "Harry was an extraordinary guy who did a tremendous amount of good things. He was so well known around Ludlow and was a great character."
He leaves his wife Jean, children Charles and Joanna and grandchildren Tom, October, Kitt and Olivia.
A memorial service will be held at St Laurence's Church on January 22 at 1pm and there will be a private family cremation. Family flowers only are requested, and donations can be made to Macmillan Nurses.
