The now traditional crowds gathered outside A Ryan & Son butchers in Much Wenlock to buy turkey, beef joints and pork pies. Around 40 people were queuing before the shop opened at 6am.

Owner Paddy Ryan said: "I expect to serve between 500 and 600 people today. It is all part of the Christmas tradition, both for the workers and the people who buy the food."

It comes as the traditional Boxing Day sales have been brought forward to Christmas Eve as dozens of retailers seek to out-do each other and win customers' hard-earned cash.

Last-minute bargain hunters will be able to cash in on internet sales from noon as online retailers slash their prices earlier than usual.
