A number of workshops have been held at Mount Pleasant Primary School and Wakeman School as well as the Birds Nest cafe in Shrewsbury Market Hall, where students and visitors have put together a collection of colourful kaleidoscope images.

The digital media expert has now started beaming the designs onto the face of the two-tier indoor market hall using a battery-powered projector and computer in a project which runs until Christmas Eve. Mr McKeown said: "This is a community driven project and we've collected loads of images together and they are instantly turned into a giant kaleidoscope which is now lighting up Shrewsbury over Christmas.

"Illuminations are very popular and so far we've had about 400 local people make a kaleidoscope."

The light show will run daily from 4pm to 10.45pm and another workshop will be held on December 19 in the market hall.

The former governor at Wakeman School, in Abbey Foregate, has already designed some of Blackpool's illuminations and beamed images on to Shropshire's Flax Mill and Nottingham's historic council house.
