Plans for a broiler unit for more than 300,000 chickens in a village in Shropshire have been recommended for approval – despite protests.

The proposals for six poultry units at Vantage Farm in Bletchley, near Market Drayton, will go before planners on Tuesday.

Opponents from the Bletchley Residents' Group say they will turn out in force at the meeting.

The plans prompted more than 100 objections, including from Moreton Say Parish Council.

Villagers claim it would cause traffic problems, create unpleasant smells and affect the rural setting.

Since the plans were first submitted more than eight months ago the applicant, Harrison Farms, has reduced the height of feed bins, increased the size of a nearby road junction and added hedgerows and signs.

In a report to be put to the North Shropshire Planning Committee on Tuesday, planning officers said the scheme was considered 'an acceptable form of development in the countryside'.
