Council tax cuts on way in Shropshire towns

Householders in two parts of Shropshire will get a bonus next spring – a four per cent cut in council tax. Shropshire Council vowed to level the levy when it took over from district and borough councils in 2009.

But, while many were expecting that tax would rise in other parts of the county to match the high costs in the Oswestry and South Shropshire areas, the council has instead decided to cut the bills there.

Most areas of Shropshire have annual bills for Band D homes of under £1,500. But in Oswestry the figure is £1,548 while in Ludlow it rises to £1,570.

Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow said the council had pledged not to raise council taxes in 2013. At a meeting of a local joint committee in St Martins he said in Oswestry and South Shropshire bills would fall.

He said: "We said that we would even-out the council tax across the authority.

"People thought we would equalise the council tax upward but we decided to equalise it downwards."
