Developers are already eyeing up sites straddling Oteley Road in the south of the town.

Now Shropshire Council has given its full backing to the vision known as the Shrewsbury South Sustainable Urban Expansion Masterplan.

It also paves the way for potential expansion at Shrewsbury Business Park and Meole Brace Retail Park while a 22-hectare employment site near to Shrewsbury Town's Greenhous Meadow could be created.

At a meeting yesterday, a majority of councillors voted in favour of the masterplan, which will be referred to once planning applications are lodged by developers.

Developer Taylor Wimpey has already launched a consultation about developing a 16-hectare site at Sutton Grange under phase one of the masterplan.
