The Crime Prevention Panel, which was formed around 12 years ago, is appealing for people to step forward to help run the scheme.

The appeal follows the panel's success in investing £3,000 into the town's CCTV scheme.

The money was used to buy more cameras, bringing the total to eight in the town, as well as upgrading some outdated equipment.

The scheme currently has eight volunteers but is are looking for more.

Local police officer Nick Allbutt said: "With enhancements such as better picture quality, the CCTV system has helped to greatly reduce the crime figures in Shifnal."

Kevin Fullerton, acting chairman of the Crime Prevention Panel, said: "The cameras are located around the town and we would like to increase the level of volunteer support and participation from the local community in the running of the CCTV scheme.

"We organise the on-going running of the cameras and there is a centre in the town where the monitoring system for the cameras is based.

"We do not monitor things continually, except when it is the carnival, but we regularly pop in and look at footage and look at it if there has been an incident. The police have confirmed the cameras do make the town a safer place.

"We would like to get more input from the community and would welcome individuals, to help the scheme thrive and further expand."

"We are not looking for a huge time commitment from anyone but the more people who are involved the smoother it will be," he added.
