Santander picked the town as the location for its new national TV advert which will be screened later this year.

Hundreds of people took part in a three-day banking challenge in The Square on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, which was filmed by production crews.

The campaign was launched to promote Santander's new 123 current account and credit card – which bank bosses claim can save people money through cashback on purchases.

Shrewsbury residents taking part in the challenge were invited to work out the potential yearly saving through using the products, which were then shown on a totaliser in The Square.

The final potential saving was more than £1 million. The challenge culminated with a traditional English fete on Saturday afternoon, when bank bosses handed over the cash to Hope House.

The money will be used for a special project to upgrade access to the internet and social media for patients.

Marie Allsop, Santander Shrewsbury branch manager, said: "It was fantastic for our local staff to be able to take part in the challenge and star in the new TV ad.

"We're going to visit the hospice in the coming weeks to see the ways in which the funds make a difference to the patients' lives, and I'd like to thank everyone who took part in the challenge for making this all possible."

Helen Ball, town clerk for Shrewsbury Town Council, added: "We are delighted that Santander chose Shrewsbury to launch this campaign and are really excited to see the finished TV ad in the autumn."
