Leader: Olympics return to birthplace Much Wenlock
Tomorrow the eyes of the nation, if not the world, will be on Shropshire.
Tomorrow the eyes of the nation, if not the world, will be on Shropshire.
It is this county's turn – again – to host the Olympic torch. If you missed it last week when the flame came to the south of the county, here is another chance to join in the Olympic party.
Some may sneer or claim they are suffering from Olympic fatigue already, before the first javelin has been thrown or the first race has been run.
Where and when to see Olympic Torch across Shropshire
But this is Shropshire's Olympic day, and an opportunity to seize with both hands a unique moment in history.
Thousands lined the route when the torch passed through Ludlow, Clee Hill, and Cleobury Mortimer. That was a tremendous success which did Shropshire proud. There was a joyous spirit and a true sense of making history.
If that is what south Shropshire, that beautiful but, relatively speaking, less well populated part of the county, can do, it throws down the gauntlet to the rest of Shropshire to rise to the occasion when the torch comes to the more urbanised parts on its journey tomorrow.
And the indications are that there will be a magnificent reception, with thousands of school pupils being given time off to enjoy what will be an event which will linger long in the memory.
One part of the journey has particular significance. The flame will spend more time passing through Much Wenlock than anywhere else in Shropshire, in a sort of tribute to the town's importance in the heritage of the Olympic Games. As Salopians should continue reminding the world, it was in Much Wenlock that William Penny Brookes started the Wenlock Olympics which helped inspire the modern Olympics.
So tomorrow is not just a visit of the Olympic flame to Shropshire.
It is a day that the Olympics comes home.
The Shropshire Star will bring unrivalled coverage of the torch relay.
Our reporters and photographers will be at every stage to help produce a fantastic eight-page souvenir supplement in Thursday's paper.
And we will be tweeting live throughout tomorrow at shropshirestar.com to make sure you don't miss a moment.
And we want you to get involved. Send your pictures and videos to us on Twitter or email them to newsroom@shropshirestar.co.uk
