About 1,000 individual pound coins have been stolen after a raid on a house in Ludlow, it has been revealed. Thieves struk in Wheat Common.

Police said the raid happened between 7pm on Saturday and 10am on Monday.

The thieves entered the house and stole a pot containing the coins, although it has not been revealed if any other items were taken.

Shops and banks across south Shropshire and the surrounding area have been placed on alert by police.

Officers believe those responsible for the theft could try to offload a large number of pound coins in a bid to cover their tracks.

Officers have launched an investigation into the incident, and anyone with information has been urged to contact police in Ludlow.

Richard Ewels, spokesman for West Mercia, said it was imporatant shopkeepers, bank staff and the general public remained vigilant and took notice of anyone handling an unuusally large number of pound coins.

Mr Ewels said: "We are appealing for any information which might help us trace the offenders. It's likely they will try to change the coins in a shop or bank.

"It is obviously a large amount of coinage, and if anyone's suspicions are raised, contact Ludlow police station on the 101 non-emergency number."
