A £1.75 million revamp of the crematorium in Shrewsbury has been approved.

Co-operative Funeralcare, which took over Emstrey Crematorium from Shropshire Council in August as part of a multi-million pound deal, can now start work to upgrade the buildings and chapel at the site in London Road next month.

The work will see a new waiting area and improved toilet facilities added to the chapel.

A spokesman for The Co-operative Group said: "The Co-operative will invest £1.75m to improve facilities at Emstrey Crematorium.

"New cremators will be installed and significant upgrades will be made to the buildings, including the service chapel and waiting room.

"Work will start in March and will be completed by the close of the year.

"We aim to keep disruption to a minimum while maintaining services.

"We have also consulted and liaised with funeral directors regarding the plans.

"This is part of our long-term commitment to Emstrey and all those families that use its services."
