A 20-year-old woman was dragged from a house in Shrewsbury after a fire broke out while she was asleep upstairs.

Firefighters had to smash their way into Katie Mycock's home in York Road, Harlescott Grange, last night after the fire broke out causing smoke to fill the building.

Neighbours raised the alarm at 10.30pm when they heard smoke alarms going off in the semi-detached house. Miss Mycock was rescued from an upstairs bedroom by firefighters before being treated at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

Today her father John, who owns the house, said his daughter had been out all day with friends at the funeral of Scott Cooke, who was murdered on Monkmoor Recreation Ground last month.

He said: "When she returned home she put something in the oven but fell asleep.

"The fire crew had to bash the door in as the front door key was on the other side of the door. The property has been left with smoke damage and there is still a smell of smoke in the air. "

He said his daughter was not taken to hospital but was checked over at the scene.

Neil Griffiths, from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said three crews were called and firefighters initially feared more people could have been inside the property.

The fire service today said smoke alarms saved Miss Mycock's life. An ambulance service spokesman said: "We received a call just after 10.30pm.

We treated one female patient with smoke inhalation. No further treatment was needed."
