Organisers today said the service, which returned yesterday after it had to be cancelled last year due to the freezing weather conditions, was a big success.

The free event took place at the club's Greenhous Meadow and attracted about 200 people. The service was conducted by Shrewsbury Town's club chaplain Reverend Christopher Deakin and a number of other club officials also took part.

Operations manager Ian Bebbington carried out the introduction while readings were made by both president Mal Starkey and community development manager Martin James.

There were also performances from both Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir and soloist Rosie Pinches. Free mince pies were donated by Sainsbury's.

Mr Bebbington said: "We were delighted to be hosting the carol service after it had to be cancelled last year. It's always a popular and well attended event and lots of people wrapped up warm and came along."

Organisers held a collection and hope to have raised a healthy sum for the baby unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, although the final total is not yet known.
