Motorists using a busy bypass have been left so impressed by a village's Christmas lights display that some have even been taking detours to have a closer look.

Villagers in Nesscliffe have embraced the seasonal spirit so much this year that their sparkling display can be seen from the bypass which runs past their homes.

And that has prompted some motorists to turn about and go into the village to have a closer inspection. Eight houses on one of the village's street have decorated their homes with dazzling and colourful lights which can be seen for miles.

One resident, 63-year-old Nev Rowlinson, has particularly caught the festive spirit.

He has been decorating his house for about 20 years and has covered all four walls and the roof of his home. He also has illuminated decorations in his garden.

He said each year he likes to buy an extra light or two to make the display larger.

At the beginning of November he held an official switch-on and more than 400 people arrived to see the lights spark into life.

He said: "There are eight or nine houses that are lit up on the same road and you can see it from the Nesscliffe bypass.

Mr Rowlinson is inviting people to make donations to Guide Dogs For The Blind.
